The legend of Mahaut

Another illustration from my years in France. Mahaut was a noblewoman who got lost in a swamp while hunting. She spent the night beset by monsters so terrifying that she swore to God that if she ever survived she would build an abbey. Which she did: l'abbaye du Sauvement (now destroyed), near Arlay, Jura.
